Darren Byfield has left Gillingham for Millwall, and believes his new employers have more chance of winning promotion next season.

Byfield was a long-term target of Millwall and has signed a three-year contract, which is reportedly worth more than the contract he was on at Priestfield last season.

With that deal being reportedly worth in the region of £4,000 a week, is it any wonder that we have lost his services?

Gills chairman Paul Scally was reportedly prepared to change the club’s wage structure to keep the former Sunderland man at Priestfield.

But that wasn’t enough for Mr Jamelia, and he revealed that recent history at Millwall encouraged him to sign.

He told PA Sport: “Millwall are a club that only a few years ago were pushing to get into the Premiership, and in 2004 they reached the FA Cup final.

“Gillingham do not have that history. The new Millwall manager (Nigel Spackman) is trying to bring in more players, and it is nice to be wanted.

“Millwall have been interested in me for a long time, and I want to repay them for that.”

And the news has got worse for Gills fans with Scally revealing that he is “not holding his breath” over goalkeeper Jason Brown staying at the club.

thats a big blow for you, is it a free transfer? or did u get a healthy sum of money?

It’s a free transfer, as he was out of contract.

Rumours have it that they’re paying him more than we already were (thought to be about £4k a week) and they’ve given him a three-year deal.

It is a blow, but I won’t be throwing myself off a bridge over it. He was never really popular with the fans and I think we can use that hefty wage in better ways. Like keeping Jason Brown.
