Will Gills Sign Any More?

The clock is ticking on the transfer window, as managers up and down the country look to bolster their squads before Friday’s midnight deadline.

Gills manager Ronnie Jepson has made no secret of his desire to add more new faces to his squad, but time is now running out for any moves to be completed.

After four defeats out of four – and a quartet of disappointing performances to boot – the Gills manager is probably one of the most desperate to add new faces to his squad ahead of the deadline.

Although the loan market will reopen in a week’s time, Jepson has proved over the past 18 months that he would rather have permanent additions to his squad than use loans, but desperate times call for desperate measures and it looks as though loans may be the way forward this time around, with no money seemingly in the kitty to pay transfer fees.

Speaking after the last of the defeats – a 3-1 reverse at Luton on Saturday – Jepson told the Medway Messenger: ‘We`ll try to bring players in. We identify people but a lot of clubs don’t want their players to go out on loan yet.

‘They’ll wait until the window’s shut for the players they want to send out on loan. They may want to move them on full-time. If they haven’t then people like ourselves might get one or two.’

However, Jepson may still need to add new faces for Saturday’s vital home clash with Walsall, with Efe Sodje still banned, and injury doubts over Simon King (hamstring) and Gary Mulligan (ankle).

Even the rumour mill has gone quiet in recent weeks – with Blackpool’s Adrian Forbes the only player even linked with a move to Priestfield in recent weeks – but on deadline day seven months ago, Jepson did manage to spring a surprise by signing Nicky Southall from Nottingham Forest, and we can only hope that he has something similar up his sleeve before midnight on Friday.
