Gills midfielder Danny Spiller is facing up to three months out after learning he needs surgery on an ankle injury.

The 29-year-old was injured in the 1-0 defeat to Southend last month, and after the injury failed to heal, he will now go under the knife.

Spiller used social networking site Twitter to announce his lay-off, saying: ‘So the two footed tackle I was on the receiving end of has resulted in needing an op… Gutted’

Manager Andy Hessenthaler has now confirmed the problem will keep the midfielder out long-term.

He told the club’s official website: ‘Danny’s had a bit of bad news and it looks like he is going to need surgery, which could put him out for the next three months. We thought it was only going to be three weeks but he’s got some complications with his ankle so it looks more like twelve.

‘That is a real blow for him, Spills is devastated, I have to say.’

he Gills have a huge injury list ahead of Saturday’s clash with Port Vale at Priestfield.

Skipper Andy Frampton, and his fellow defenders Garry Richards and Matt Fish, along with stand-in left-back Danny Jackman all suffered injuries in Tuesday night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Barnet, with Barry Fuller, Jack Payne, Joe Martin and Adam Birchall also on the sidelines.

Hessenthaler had hinted at recalling Simon King back from his loan spell at Plymouth, but as yet there has been no news on that decision.
