Gillingham`s only pre-season signing so far goalkeeper Alan Julian has set his sights on the number one shirt.

The 25-year-old is hoping to impress boss Mark Stimson and play his way during pre-season into the number one spot currently held by Simon Royce.

He will have his work cut out to oust the current Gills player of the season who became a fans favourite in his first season at the club.

It is clear that Julian is willing to bide his time before taking his place in the Gills first team.

Talking to the Saturday Observer he said: “I will give it my best shot to being number one, any footballer will tell you they want to play, but I have got a lot of respect for Roycey.

“I`m looking forward to meeting him and learning from him. He`s played at a very high level in the game and he`s done very well.”

The shot stopper is no stranger to league football having begun his career at League Two rivals Brentford where he played nineteen times before moving to Stevenage.

Talking about his experiences playing in the Blue Square Premier he said: “I felt I had done okay in the Conference and I was ready to test myself at a higher level so I wanted to give myself the opportunity. Fortunately it came up here and I`m looking forward to it.”
