It probably doesn’t have quite the appeal to many it once did (too many devalue it) but the FA Cup is still regarded by many as ‘the best cup competition in the world’, Gillingham now enter the competition.

Gillingham can, all being well, ‘enjoy’ a break from league 1 with this FA Cup first round tie against fellow league 1 side, and league leaders, Bristol City at Priestfield this afternoon.

We’ve got doubts over Luke Norris and Danny Kedwell (both knee) with loanee ‘keeper Stephen Bywater (ineligible) sitting out, as he might have anyway, so Stuart Nelson will return.

Amine Linganzi and Adam Morris (both hamstring) are definitely missing today.

Bristol City look to defend a record of just one defeat in all competitions all season, but that isn’t going to stop Steve Cotterill making some changes to his side.

Ahead of the game Gills boss Peter Taylor told BBC Radio Kent: ‘We are under a bit of pressure because of our recent form. I hold my hands up to the situation we are in and we would like to be doing better.

‘Being the FA Cup, there is a little bit more freedom. We would like to put in a good performance to be in the next round and give everybody a lift.

‘This time last year we lost against a non-league team. Bristol City are in good form and the scout has not put too many negatives on them.

‘It is a big test for us but I still feel that that is what the Cup is about.’

This certainly is a ‘big test’ for us but if we do lose, which hopefully we won’t, at least it isn’t to a non-league side like we did last season when Brackley Town beat us in a first round replay!
