A win in league 1 is of more importance at this time but a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win on Tuesday should well prove a good boost for Gillingham.

The pressure on Peter Taylor should have been eased a little with a 2-1 comeback win at Broadfield Stadium on Tuesday night as we knocked out Crawley Town in the JPT to move into the semi finals of the southern section.

Praise was given to the players, who haven’t always got this and perhaps not always deserved, but he feels this was right to be given.

Speaking to the media after the game he said: ‘Tremendous effort in the second half and I thought the players worked incredibly hard to get back in the game, of course we go down to 10 men so they have to work even harder.

‘They did and I’ve congratulated them on that, I thought the second half was great and the start of the first was decent but there were too many things in the first half that I didn’t think was enough and I think that’s why we were losing at half time.’

Izale McLeod’s (21) penalty put the home side ahead but even after Joe Martin’s sending off we still managed to level up through Jermaine McGlashan (68) before Doug Loft (87) struck the winner with just three-minutes to play before a penalty shootout.

Taylor hailed the effort of the 10-men, he knows that when that’s the case you’ve got to take the chances that you get to get back into the game and ‘thankfully for us’ McGlashan did, scoring his first goal for the club.

His finishing isn’t his strong point though with Taylor also highlighting that! He really didn’t think that we could have ‘done any more’ than we did in the second periods.

The boss wasn’t too unhappy with the red card of Martin as such, but what he wasn’t happy with was the fact that McLeod got away with only a yellow card, he felt if one went both should have went.

Taylor added: ‘My complaints are that it was either two yellows or two reds. Joe is saying he got pushed first by Izale McLeod and everyone agrees with that.

‘He might have got pushed in the throat area – Joe shouldn’t have pushed but he has. Why is one red and one a yellow? That’s harsh but we will have a look at it on the video.’
