The league one season continued for Gillingham in midweek as they looked to build on a weekend win.

Gillingham took on Coventry City at Priestfield on Tuesday night and eventually ran out 4-2 winners over the 10-man Sky Blues in a game littered with penalties.

Peter Taylor was obviously happy to get the points but does wish his side could make it a little easier but cutting out ‘silly mistakes’, he also knows that it’s another win towards safety but this isn’t the case yet with him unsure how many points it will take.

The Gills boss said: ‘It’s lovely to get maximum points out of the last two home matches, but I didn’t like us.

‘Don’t get me wrong, Coventry have some excellent players and we got tested, but we were sloppy at times and it could have been 4-4.

‘We made silly mistakes – I want the players to think about winning matches and being a bit more solid.

‘I don’t know how close we are to survival. We’ve just got to keep on getting points. We’re delighted to have 44 points, but there’s still work to do.’

Coventry went down to 10-men when Dan Seaborne was sent off, which gave Adebayo Akinfenwa the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot. Callum Wilson equalised for Coventry also from the penalty spot with Myles Weston restored the lead. Akinfenwa scored his second penalty with Carl Baker then converting the fourth penalty of the game before Jake Hessenthaler secured the points.

Akinfenwa’s contrition brought praise from Taylor, who added: ‘Bayo took two outstanding penalties, he was really calm. As soon as Danny Kedwell got injured and we had to think about a penalty taker, Bayo said, ‘Don’t worry about that!’

‘I didn’t argue with him. I’m pleased for Myles Weston too, as he hasn’t scored all season, and a player of his ability should. And Jake took his goal really well.’
