Gillingham literally paid the penalty at the weekend as a missed spot kick condemned us to an away defeat.

A late penalty save by Roy Carroll made sure that Gillingham came away from Meadow Lane with nothing as Notts County ran out 1-0 winner.

Shortly before the break the deadlock was broken as Shaun Harrad (35) headed Stephen Bywater, the on loan Millwall ‘keeper keeping his place, to give Notts County the lead.

On the stroke of half time Doug Loft looked as though he had drawn us level, but his 25-yard effort struck the bar.

We went close in the second half too, Cody McDonald had his effort cleared off the line by defender Louis Laing.

Finally, and perhaps what we deserved, a really good chance to draw level came with 10-minutes left to play when Bradley Dack was fouled by Laing in the area, handing us a penalty.

Luke Norris stepped up but Northern Ireland international Carroll was the hero as he saved the striker penalty to ensure Notts County won one-nil.
