Justin Edinburgh returned to his former side Newport this week to sign Ryan Jackson on a free.

With Gavin Hoyte, Leon Legge and Joe Martin all leaving, with Edinburgh releasing them, defenders were needed first and foremost and Jackson’s very familiar to the manager with his signing confirmed on the Official Website.

The chance to work with him again wasn’t one that Edinburgh wanted to pass up.

‘I am delighted to get Ryan on board; he was an excellent performer during my time with Newport and I look forward to working with him once again here at Gillingham.’

As for Jackson himself, he could have stayed with the League 2 side but the chance to step up a Division to sign for us, and work with his former manager again, wasn’t something he could turn down.

‘I’m delighted to be a Gillingham player, I can’t wait to get started and I’ve worked with Justin before so he knows how to get the best out of me.’

Having rejected the offer of a new contract at Rodney Parade the 24-year-old has signed a two-year contract with us; this will officially kick in from the end of June.
