Gillingham might be in need of at least one ‘keeper this summer following confirmation that Stuart Nelson is no longer no.1 at Priestfield.

Glenn Morris, who ended the season as Justin Edinburgh’s first choice ‘keeper, has been offered a new one-year deal but as yet hasn’t signed this but the suggestion from the Gills manager has been that if he signs this he’ll probably be the one he goes with?

Nelson on the other hand might have played his final game for us after Edinburgh, quoted by KentOnline, said that he couldn’t offer Nelson the ‘guarantees’ that he wanted about his position.

Edinburgh wouldn’t have any ‘qualms calling upon him’ but he would be allowed to leave if he wished to do so.

‘Stuart Nelson wants to be No.1 and I can’t guarantee him that.

‘I am always honest and I couldn’t guarantee he would be No.1. I think at this stage of his career and what he is used to, he wants to be given the indication that would be the case and I didn’t do that.

‘There were no voices raised. He has conducted himself correctly every day in training and I would have no qualms in calling upon him, but what Stuart’s needs are, I can’t guarantee those.’

The winner of the Player of the Year award the season before last, who still has another year on his contract, has seen reports linking him with Ebbsfleet but having worked with him at Notts County and brought him to the club originally Martin Allen could also show an interest having won the Conference title with Barnet last season to get them back into League 2.

It would appear that Edinburgh will now have to sign at least one ‘keeper this summer, maybe two depending on what Morris decides!
