Ahead of the weekend game, which saw Peter Taylor take charge of what could potentially be his final Gillingham, the boss had some views to share.

He had already made it clear that he wanted to be given the chance to continue beyond the end of his short-term deal but knows this is out of his hands. One thing that hasn’t been has been the league one survival that the Gills have managed.

Upon doing this he has paid tribute to all involved, the players and all coaching staff with him of the opinion that he can also hold his ‘head up high’ at this.

Taylor told Gills Player: ‘The target was to keep us up – everyone has worked exceptionally hard.

‘John Schofield and Carl Muggleton are two members of staff I didn’t know before I came here, they have worked incredibly hard. James and Gary on the fitness and physio side, and of course the players.

‘I can hold my head up high in the respect of the last thing anybody wanted, following the great work the club did last year, was to go back to League Two.

‘In that respect, target accomplished which I`m really pleased about.’

Very much ‘target accomplished’.

Whatever the future holds for Taylor he revealed that he has found it ‘enjoyable, interesting and also very hard work’ upon his return but doesn’t regret it at all and is ‘pleased’ he did.
