Gillingham were beaten once again as a poor run of form continued when league 1 new boys Fleetwood Town beat us at Highbury Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

An early mistake made the difference with the solitary goal as the result of that leading to Fleetwood’s 1-0 win.

Millwall loanee ‘keeper Stephen Bywater was back in the starting XI but he might not be staying there after his poor attempted punch gave Fleetwood’s new loanee arrival from Milton Keynes Dons on Friday Tom Hitchcock (3) latching onto this to mark his debut with a goal.

Gareth Evans had a chance to add to this but couldn’t hit the target, to our relief.

A defensive mistake in the Fleetwood defence, unlike our error, wasn’t capitalised upon though with Fleetwood ‘keeper Chris Maxwell getting back to keep out Danny Kedwell effort that was heading in with the aide of a deflection.

Hitchcock looked to get in again in the second half but he couldn’t test Bywater this time with Fleetwood defender also putting a diving header just wide.

Bywater made another mistake but this time, having spilled a Josh Morris effort Stephen Dobbie and Hitchcock looked to follow up but they weren’t able to on this occasion, but Bywater was having a mare!

Despite the dominance that the home side had after a penalty area scramble Leon Legge, who looked set to leave not to long ago, fired an effort just wide as we sought an unlikely equaliser.
