Gillingham’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy run continues with us overcoming Colchester United on Tuesday night at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, winning a penalty shootout.

After 90-minutes the game was deadlocked at 3-3, so a penalty shootout was required to determine the winners, which fortunately for us would be us with an unlikely hero!

Things started well for Colchester as they took an the lead as Drey Wright (17) fired past the returning Stuart Nelson into the top corner from 25-yards.

We weren’t behind for long though with Ben Dickenson (24) getting onto Joe Martin’s pass to level it up at one-one at the midway stage of the first half.

Callum Davies didn’t celebrate his new deal in the way he would have wanted when he brought down Rhys Healey in the box to give Colchester a penalty shortly before the break. Sanchez Watt (38) stepped up to restore the lead for the home side.

Determined not to be beaten though we were again level early in the second half when Jermaine McGlashan’s run and cross was converted by Bradley Dack (55) to make it two-two with Amine Linganzi then giving Antonio German (74) the chance to give us the lead for the first time on the night, which he duly did with a little over 15-minutes to play to make it three-two.

Former Gills loanee, just signed by Colchester on loan from Ipswich Town, Elliott Hewitt picked out Freddie Sears (87) with the former West Ham United man sending the game into a penalty shootout after the three-three draw.

In his first game back since being injured on the opening day of the season ‘keeper Nelson not only saved penalties from George Moncur and Tom Eastman he then stepped up himself to secure us a 4-2 win and a place in round three, the draw for which takes place on Saturday.
