Both sides went into Tuesday’s meeting at the Proact Stadium as ‘outsiders’ for a play-off place in League 1 at the end of the season but with Gillingham returning having been beaten by Chesterfield three-nil they are now the much more likely to force themselves in.

Victory moved the hosts to within three-points of the top six.

The Gills never really recovered from a poor start with Clucas (3) beating Nelson to make it one nil with the game barely underway with the second coming when a Roberts cross was turned in by O’Shea (12) less than 10-minutes later to virtually seal the win before a quarter of an hour was played!

Marquis threatened to get us back into the game but Chesterfield ‘keeper Lee saved his header with the three-nil win secured two-minutes from time when Clucas added his second.

It’s a disappointing loss, off the back of the fine point at Bristol City on Saturday, but we’re still more than comfortable around midtable, which is probably above what was expected just a few short weeks back!
