Martin Allen’s performance as Gillingham manager, guiding them club to an unbeaten start to league two, has seen him named manager of the month for August.

Allen, as he told Sky Sports News, was quick to praise others than have helped him claim this award though.

Chairman Paul Scally, and the players, were praised: ‘the chairman promised money this summer and he has delivered. All in all it’s gone well so far and I’m very happy.

‘Overall everything is in place. We’ve got some very good young players here, it’s a good blend.

‘This job is a totally different challenge. Andy was unlucky to lose his job but I was asked to take over a club that finished eighth last season which was really different for me. People have bought into it and the players have done really well.’

And to think that he could have been Barnet manager instead had they decided they wanted him! Their loss has been The Gills’ gain for sure.

However, the manager of the month award is often a “jinx” so Allen, and Gillingham, will be hoping to avoid this at the weekend!
